From 14–20 July, an empty shop in Weston-super-Mare’s Sovereign Centre becomes an unexpected portal to the Mendip Hills. ‘View In, View Out’ (VIVO) is a free, drop-in sound installation that layers field recordings, community voices, and sonic storytelling to explore the natural and cultural landscapes of Somerset. Created by Gwyneth Herbert, Jason Singh, and Chris Howard, the piece is rooted in workshops with local residents and young people .

Expect to hear the whispers of ancient caves, the fading song of ash trees, and the chatter of birds from the plateau—all without leaving the high street. For those keen to venture further, the project extends into the Mendip Hills and Weston’s South Ward with an augmented reality trail blending audio and animated illustrations .

Commissioned as part of the Nature Calling programme, VIVO invites visitors to reconsider their relationship with the landscapes around them. No tickets, no queues—just drop in and listen.
