Ready to dive into the world of pottery? Our intensive Wheel Throwing Course is designed for those looking to enhance their skills and confidence with clay. Whether you’re a beginner or seeking to refine your technique, this course provides a comprehensive journey through the essentials of wheel throwing.
Over four engaging sessions, we’ll guide you from the basics to more advanced techniques, covering essential skills like centering, pulling up, and wiring off. This course is designed to study throwing in detail to build your confidence and material knowledge. After your four sessions of making we will organise a group glazing day where you can decorate your fired pieces.
Although we will be working on specific outcomes, this course emphasises material knowledge and experimentation to help you build robust skills. Key focus areas include: Consistency: Achieve uniformity in your clay work Thickness: Control the wall thickness of your pottery pieces Compression: Strengthen the structure of your ceramics Form: Shape and define your pottery creations Water Management: Maintain the right moisture levels for optimal results Pressure Application: Apply the correct amount of force during shaping Safe Practice: Learn best practice studio habits as you learn
Week 1: A briefing on preparing clay followed by an induction to the wheel where we'll cover centering, pulling up and wiring off cylindrical pots. Week 2: Developing our cylinders into bottle forms, learning to collar in and create neck forms. Week 3: Learning to control wide forms and using tools to create smooth curving bowls. Week 4: Learning to centre larger volumes of clay, covering the importance of compressing as we learn to make plates.
Classes are held once a week at the same time for four consecutive weeks, allowing you to steadily build and refine your skills. Build up your own bespoke body of work, ready for a glazing workshop (included in this ticket). The glazing course will be organised for after 2 weeks to ensure time for your work to be fired.
In between sessions, you are encouraged to practice your skills at our Friday night open access sessions. Tickets include all clay- the outcomes can be used during course time.
