FEIN Collections asked its seven international contemporary featured artists that which the term ‘sustainability’ means to them. One’s mind might, understandably, seek answers regarding climate change, biodiversity, migration or infrastructure. The artists’ very personal answers were as diverse as their myriad works:

For some, the term refers to an act of balance in a shifting world. For others it is a commitment to authenticity, a respect for the landscapes and materials they work with, or a readiness to face the unexpected.

In 'Sustainability: Anticipation of Disaster,' through painting, photography and interdisciplinary practice, FEIN Collections’ represented artists address sustainability as an ecological, creative, and personal question that resists a single definition. Together, their works form a conversation about respect, resilience, vulnerability, and the multiplicities we all contain.

The exhibition’s title comes from artist Gareth Lloyd’s reflection: ‘Sustainability can be read as a secular messianism: the promise of a consistent future grounded in representability, probability, and calculability; anticipation of disaster.’
